Cinnamon & Sugar "Tidbits"!


Who remembers these?! Whenever my Mom made a pie, she would use up the scraps of pastry to make these little cinnamon sugar rolls that she would call "tidbits". My brother and I would race into the kitchen when they were just out of the oven and fight over who would get more...Mom would always holler "save some for your dad's tea!!", which we were always reluctant to do, but scared not to! Lol!!

I think everybody has a different name for these but throughout my family, they are known as "tidbits". I was talking to my cousin one day and said, "hey Jen, do you remember when Aunt Dorothy used to make cinn..." she quickly cut me off and yelled "tidbits??!!" Lol...I guess you could say that "food" is a family thing for us!!

All you need to do to make these quick little cinnamon bites, is preheat your oven to 350 degrees, then roll out bits of scrap pastry (the trimmings from a pie or tarts etc....or use store bought pie dough), then spread softened butter over top.

Add some brown sugar...

...spread it out evenly,

...then toss on some ground cinnamon.

Roll up the dough, pinching the ends when you are done.

Then, use a sharp knife, cut the dough into 1" slices,

...then place on a parchment lined baking sheet and bake in your preheated 350 degree oven for about 20-25 minutes..

...or until golden brown. Remove from oven and place on a wire rack to cool (be careful not to touch the tidbits right away as the brown sugar will turn to a sticky, hot syrup that is like molten lava as soon as it comes out of the oven!!...molten lava brown sugar touching your fingers = not good! )

When the tidbits are cool enough to handle, serve with a nice cold glass of milk...

...or with a spot of tea for a nice afternoon treat!

Cinnamon & Sugar "Tidbits"

scraps of pie pastry (or store bought pie dough)

softened butter

brown sugar (how much depending on how much dough you have)

ground cinnamon to taste for sprinkling (again, depending on how much dough you have to roll out)

1. Roll out scraps of pie pastry fairly thin.

2. Spread enough softened butter over top to cover in a thin coating, then spread out about a 1/4 cup of brown sugar over top for a 15 inch disc of rolled out dough.

3. Sprinkle the top with ground cinnamon, then starting at the longest end, roll up the dough, pinching the ends when you are done.

4. Use a sharp knife to slice the roll into 1" slices, then place on a parchment lined baking sheet. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for about 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

5. Remove from the oven and place on a wire rack to cool...Enjoy! :)
